For Reiko and Alan Schoen

The Gyroid is a piece that attempts to musically capture and convey the awe-inspiring structure of its namesake. Discovered by physicist Alan Schoen in 1970, a gyroid is an infinitely connected triply periodic minimal surface that has had significant practical applications in many different fields from architecture to medicine. In an effort to evoke this fascinating scientific phenomenon, I compositionally confined myself to a three-note intervallic structure which serves as the foundation for every developmental aspect of the music. My goal was to demonstrate the infinite nature and complexity of the gyroid’s structure, all while using a minimal amount of constructional content.
